Here’s a birthday idea for you: Facebook and LinkedIn make it super easy for your connections to write, “Happy Birthday!”
Don’t smile and ignore these. Don’t write a global Facebook note to thank everybody at once.
A missed opportunity, methinks. Instead, write each person back individually.
Your friend dipped his/her toe in the water, thinking a quick “Happy Birthday” will give them “easy credit” for staying in touch.
If you meaningfully reply, the exchange takes a turn. Now, they are on the hook to reply with something a bit meatier.
Who knows? Maybe they’ll say, “You know, now that we’re talking, I could use your product.”
I’ve got 100 meaningful thank yous to write!
