Do we have any Who fans out there?
“You better you bet” is the theme song for today’s Journey. I figured I should make it easy for you to play it, since I just put the song in your head.
But don’t play it now.
Because I want you to play Gunter’s new video instead.
Do you know Gunter Wessels?
If you don’t, you’re probably new around these parts. Gunter spoke at three of my 10x Medical Device Conferences (he’s returning in 2019), hosted Medical Devices Group webinars, wrote this controversial piece for Medical Marcom, and more.
We met on Twitter seven years ago – to the day this week – the dawn of my little Medical Marcom experiment.
In fact, this was likely the first day on my own. My 3½-year engagement as Director of Marketing Communications for Cardiac Science ended the week before.
I had written:
I aspire to be to marketing what Brian Sullivan is to sales @preciseselling. Brian, we met at MDSI in 2009. Now out on my own. Talk?
— JoeHage | #MedDevice (@MedicalMarcom) March 16, 2011
He retweeted it and added a comment.
I looked him up and checked out his website.
Here’s the exchange that sparked our seven-year friendship.
Thanks for the RT @gunterwessels. Some low-hanging fruit on your website. For starters, update "2010" on homepage. We can talk if you like.

Gunter is a national healthcare expert and specializes in healthcare sales training, business development, and sales force buy-in.
Remember how everyone talked about ObamaCare, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act? Do you know anyone who actually read it? I do.
Gunter absorbs the most complex healthcare issues and gives you digestible information you can give to your sales force. They go out and meet the world equipped with an often-better understanding of their prospects pain points than they have. (He taught me what to say in those situations.)
Gunter is very much in demand.
Gunter is well compensated.
How well?
Let’s just say, if you had to ask how much Gunter costed to train your sales force, you probably couldn’t afford him.
But now you can.
Introducing LiquidSMARTS℠ and Gunter’s videos
Okay, so Gunter is super great. I’ll move on.
Along with CEO Jennifer Bravo, Gunter recently launched LiquidSMARTS℠ to deliver data-driven development and soft skill-oriented learning to increase your sale volumes.
For LiquidSMARTS, Gunter uses video as his main medium. Here, with his permission, I share one chapter in his 70-video library. (He’s planning 200 by year end.)
Please watch it and learn. It’s four minutes.
Now the punch line.
You know who edited that video for him?
❤️ ¡LUCÍA! ❤️
I saw the original cut of that video and I said, “Gunter, you’ve got to let Lucía re-edit this for you.”
You know how I have, “How much is it?” as the thumbnail for the video above? This is what the pre-Lucía frame looked like.
It’s ???? and ????.
Did she make Gunter better, better? YOU BET!
Just by using animation, sound, and a whole lotta creativity.
Both videos featured the same exact Gunter, the same green screen, the same audio file.
Old video: My mind wandered a bit.
Lucía video: I was riveted. I comprehended more and retained more.
Now it’s your turn.
Marketing is turning to video. It’s a great medium to entertain, persuade, and inform.
1. You should make some.
2. You can “just shoot a video with your phone and post the raw footage” a lot of the time.
3. You should find yourself the right Lucía the rest of the time.
It’s not expensive. Just do it.
Fast Round
- Free Gunter video trial. Take advantage of this offer if you sell anything. And that should be all of you. Use code “Journey” to save 25% if you choose to buy after your free trial. https://learn.liquidsmarts.com/register
- Read this about emojis. I’m using them more often because of this.
- 11 lessons about storytelling. The content of Jay’s video is solid but look at the design choices he made. I left him a compliment in the comments.
Thank you for joining me on The Journey.
See you next week – or sooner – if you choose to reply to this email,
P.S. For our 20th wedding anniversary, Beth found the single most expensive restaurant in Washington State! So if any of you have any money lying around, would you send it to me? ????
P.P.S. I get to meet Lucía for the first time in two weeks. She’s my 10x Medical Device Conference cinematographer this April!
